Imagine feeding children fresh fruit and honoring someone special at the same time! That is the plan TWAM has for a brand new ‘ Memorial Orchard’. Starting an orchard in Malawi has been on the drawing board for several months but an old friend and supporter of TWAM was the impetus. He sent an email 3 days ago because his mother passed away and he wanted to honor her in some way. He wrote, “With Mom’s missionary spirit I would prefer to contribute something in her name to your children’s ministry rather than something that will fade and end up in the trash.” We suddenly realized that an orchard is just an orchard but how perfectly wonderful would it be to have a memorial orchard – a place where people could honor a loved one by growing a tree , something enduring, a fruit bearing tree that would feed a hungry child? The ball is rolling with the first tree honoring our friend’s mom, and the second tree in memory of Lucy’s 2 year old grandson, who died from pneumonia on January 30. Lucy is the administrator of the Malawi project. Each tree is priced at $70. Some may think the price is rather steep but we want to plant well-established trees that will bear fruit in 1-2 years rather than 5+ years. What fruit will be grown? Guava, peach, mango, granadilla, avocado, banana & papaya.
Every tree will be marked with the name of the honored person and a picture of the planted tree will be sent to the donor. Who do you want to honor today?
“That person is like a tree planted by streams of water, which yields its fruit in season and whose leaf does not wither – whatever they do prospers.” Psalms 1:3
