It’s been 10 months since the big earthquake in Nepal. Though in other nations the earthquake is ‘old news’, here in Nepal, it is up front and center. In Kathmandu and Thamel, the tourist district, the damage was not severe, yet in the central mountains 90% of the villages were wiped out. Just 20-30 minutes from Kathmandu the destruction is very apparent. Many lives were lost, homes were destroyed and slowly the clean up continues. The newspapers state that rebuilding will take about 30 years.
Tremors continue almost on a daily basis. Three times since my arrival there have been tremors ranging from 4.3 to 5.5 on the Richter scale. Tremors have become a fact of life but even so, people are afraid. Scientists are predicting ‘the big one’, a massive earthquake much stronger than the 8.1 magnitude of last April. There have been 322 earthquakes in Nepal in the past year, mostly in the moderate range of 4.0 – 5.5.
Please continue to pray for the people of Nepal. Their lives have been turned upside down and for many, life will never be the same.
