There are 3 more story entries for the Nepal earthquake competition. As you have noticed, the stories written by the children do not give much detail. In Nepal children are not taught creative writing, nor are feelings generally expressed – period. In the West we are inundated with books and programs advocating the expression of ‘feelings’. In Nepal people are focused on simply getting through another day, and hopefully that day will include a meal and a place to sleep. I knew when we asked the children to write about their experience it was a bit of a stretch and yet, I feel the children did pretty well.
My Feelings – By Sony Subedi
I am a student in class ten. I spend my daily life very simply. I always get up from my bed early in the morning at 5:00. First I wash my face and brush my teeth. Then I take a little physical exercise for twenty minutes. Now I am going to write my experience in the earthquake.
I was in church worshiping and suddenly the building was shaking. All the people were moving from here and there. Half of the people started to cry and the other people started to praise the Lord.
From that day forward we had to live in the church with our principal, Devi Mam and David Sir. Many students went to their homes and many people stayed in the church. At that time all the students used to call their relatives but they can’t reach them due to earthquake.
This is my first experience in an earthquake in my life.
